Scope of Position
Reporting to the General Manager of the company’s Canadian branch, the Engineering Manager will oversee all engineering activities related to the development, delivery and support of the company’s Canadian branch products.
Functional Tasks
Demonstrated ability to:
• Lead engineering activities and provide insight into technical solutions to design, manufacture and test issues for the engineering department.
• Set goals, establish priorities, manage resources, develop new product concepts and approaches, manage projects, progress and results; make management decisions.
• Oversee the development, evaluation or review of plans and criteria for a variety of activities; assesses feasibility of proposed plans, projects and equipment.
• Supervises subordinate personnel including: hiring, determining workload and delegating assignments, training, monitoring and evaluating performance, and initiating corrective or disciplinary actions.
• Establish and execute procedures for maintaining high standards of quality, reliability, and safety in product designs and applications.
• Evaluate, develop and enforce improved techniques for the control of product designs, quality, reliability and safety.
• To be fully responsible for projects assigned. Must interface with customers, subcontractors, suppliers and assigned engineering personnel to ensure a quality product on schedule, and within budget.
• Ensure product designs are suitable for cost effective manufacturing Oversee development of production data package that includes drawings, manufacturing and test procedures and data test.
• Interact with customer, Business Development and Company personnel to bring about innovative ideas and solutions resulting in new products or markets.
• Support the preparation of technical proposals, estimates of feasibility, costs, manning and schedule.
• Recommend training/new equipment purchases to ensure technical staffs maintain up-to-date skills.
• Represent the Company in a positive and proactive fashion and support trade shows, conferences and meetings.
• Ensure that both personal and departments business is conducted in accordance with Company and Group procedures, applicable laws and regulations.
• Prepare and submit progress reports, monthly activity reports business plans as required in a timely and accurate fashion.
• Provides leadership and supervision necessary to stimulate and motivate people in a positive fashion toward the successful achievement of their assigned responsibilities and objectives.
• Demonstrated ability to balance process and speed.
• Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects with changing priorities. Must be able to work effectively in a team environment or individually.
• Make independent, sound and accurate judgment; include appropriate people in the decision making process; and, makes timely decisions
• Participate as part of the management team in the development of the strategic plan.
Preferred Experience/Education
The following indicates specific industry, academic and functional experience/qualifications that are important to the successful achievement of the identified responsibilities and performance deliverables:
• 4 year Engineering degree in mechanical, aerodynamics, math or physics
• Minimum 10 years experience in military markets and products performing similar duties to this position; Experience in parachute, or restraint systems industries is considered an asset.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Speaks clearly and persuasively in positive or negative situations; listens and gets clarification; responds well to questions; and demonstrates individual/group presentation skills. Writes clearly and informatively.
• Must be able to effectively interact with a diverse group of business contacts and company personnel. Approaches others in a tactful manner; reacts well under pressure; accepts responsibility for own actions; and, follows through on commitments.
• Identifies and resolves problems in a timely manner; gathers and analyzes information skills fully; develops alternative solutions; works well in group problem solving situations; and, uses reason even when dealing with emotional topics.
• Experience in design optimization, DFM and/or Value Design would be considered an asset.
• .Demonstrate a level of business savvy essential to detecting good business opportunities.
• Good computer skills. Good working knowledge of various Microsoft Office products and publishing software.
• Program management experience in a defense environment
• Test and design experience with military or related products.
